On Tuesday, a shocking report claimed that undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor have reached a deal for an unprecedented super fight between athletes from different sports. Shortly after though, both Mayweather and UFC president Dana White refuted the report.
The Irish Sun initially released the bombshell of a report, claiming that a source close to Conor McGregor’s Straight Blast Gym said that the UFC champion and Floyd Mayweather have agreed on a deal, settling on their respective fees for the mega fight. The unnamed source also said that the contract hasn’t been signed due to a “third party hold-up.”
Yahoo Sports then reached out to Dana White, who flat out denied the report, succinctly saying it was “not true.” Floyd Mayweather also did his part to refute the report, tweeting late Tuesday that “there hasn’t been any deals made in regards to a fight between myself and any other fighters.” Curiously, it was Mayweather who initially fueled the rumors, telling ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith Monday night that the his and Conor McGregor’s camp were getting “very, very close” to finalizing the massive event.

While Conor McGregor has yet to release an official statement on the reports, he posted an Instagram photo Wednesday with the caption, “I am in Las Vegas. Floyd has retired on my arrival.” The Irishman was in Las Vegas Tuesday to meet with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to have the disciplinary action stemming from a bottle-throwing incident re-evaluated. Conor McGregor has said he intends to get a boxing license in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather’s adopted hometown. “There is a lot of real stuff going on,” NSAC commissioner Anthony Marnell said. “It still seems like a long shot, but when there is a lot of money involved, people tend to figure it out.” Dana White has previously said Conor McGregor has four fights remaining on his current deal. It remains to be seen how Floyd Mayweather and his camp can find a way around the normally air-tight UFC contract.
