Florida prosecutors have assigned at least two investigators to probe sexual assault charges levied against Florida State state star quarterback Jameis Winston, even though they readily admit they "doubt we're going to get a statement" from him.
"You can't compel him to talk," William Meggs, state attorney for Florida's 2nd judicial circuit told USA TODAY Sports. "He has a right against self-incrimination."
The alleged incident took place on the night of Dec. 7, 2012, and attorneys for Winston previously told reporters they had been told as recently as February their client had been cleared of all allegations, which began with a woman calling police around 4 a.m. complaining of an attack after a night of partying during which she admits she had been drinking.
Lead attorney Tim Jansen now also insists several witnesses are now prepared to back Winston's version of events on the night in question.
"We'll get to the bottom of it and do the right thing," Meggs told USA TODAY. "Since it's now been dumped in our laps, we're going to make sure it is properly investigated. Whether it has been so far, I don't know."
Meanwhile, FSU officials have released a statement asserting that Winston will remain with the team. The No. 2 ranked and unbeaten Seminoles are led by the red-shirt freshman, considered by many to be one of the country's leading Heisman Trophy Award candidates.
