Firing Mack Brown? Lopsided Loss to Oklahoma State in Front of New Athletic Director Puts Texas Coach Back on Hot Seat (VIDEO LINK)

Mack Brown reaction to Texas interception vs. Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma State football team may have made new Texas athletic director Steve Patterson's job a little easier on Saturday afternoon.

Patterson, whom Texas hired on Nov. 7, now has the task of deciding Longhorn coach Mack Brown's fate, and Brown's team certainly did not make a good impression in a 38-13 home loss to 10th-ranked Oklahoma State.

Texas, which entered the game as the No. 23 team in the nation, has lost eight straight home games to ranked foes over a four-season span. The loss Saturday quickly reignited rumors about Brown's possible dismissal at season's end.

The Longhorns had won six straight before the thumping at the hands of the Cowboys on Saturday.

Brown is in his 16th year as Texas coach and led the program to national prominence in the first decade of the new millennium. The Longhorns won the national championship for the 2005 season and played for another national championship at the end of the 2009 season.

Since that time, the Longhorns have a record of 29-19 overall and a mediocre 17-16 in the Big 12. Those marks have led to frustration among Texas fans that are getting more anxious with each passing year to see a change and, hopefully, a return to prominence.

During Patterson's introductory news conference, he, school President Bill Powers and advisory committee member Pam Willeford said that football, along with men's basketball and baseball and the coaching staffs for all three programs, were not topics of discussion during Patterson's interviews for the job. That was reported by the Austin-American Statesman.

Patterson also said during that news conference that he didn't anticipate making any major changes over the next few years.

But with Texas facing two more big challenges in Texas Tech and unbeaten Baylor to close out the regular season, a slump to end the regular season certainly could influence Patterson to rethink his position on Brown.

Texas' lopsided loss Saturday at the very least could propel Patterson to start looking into program's health.
