Prosecutors probing the sexual assault allegations lodged against Florida State star quarterback Jameis Wilson are now working to secure an interview with the alleged victim, who has since moved out of state, according to Al.com.
While admitting the difficulty in trying to piece together a case and interview a witness related to a crime that allegedly took place a year earlier, Florida State Attorney William Meggs maintains "I'm going to do everything I'm supposed to do to the right thing."
Sources indicate FSU campus police were made aware of the alleged crime on the night of Dec. 7, 2012 and soon thereafter turned over their findings to Tallahassee police, who then inexplicably waited nearly a year before forwarding the complaint to prosecutors.
"There's nothing like being fresh on a case and walking in and saying, 'what happened last night,'" Meggs told Al.com. "Now they've been talking to lawyers, they've been talking to each other and getting their stories together. ... People have had 11 months to decide what they're going to say."
Winton's attorney, Tom Jansen, said Saturday he's given officials two affidavits from eye witnesses that will "completely exonerate my client." He's repeatedly said his client did nothing wrong and he thought the investigation was over months ago.
Somewhat surprisingly, Winston remained amazingly calm during the No. 2 ranked Seminoles 59-3 drubbing of Syracuse on Saturday. The redshirt freshmen, widely considered one of the leading candidates for this year's Heisman Trophy, completed 19 of 21 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns.
But Meggs insists it won't be enough for him to take his eye off the ball in terms of the way he conducts his investigation.
"We have a female victim here, too, and my job is to make sure that this victim or any victim of a crime has their rights protected. ... Everything is now focused on Winston and what's going to happen to him."
