The San Francisco Giants are hoping for better luck with the latest free-agent pitcher they've signed that once played across the Bay Area.
Multiple media reports indicate that free-agent starting pitcher Tim Hudson has agreed to a two-year contract with the Giants. According to Fox Sports, the price tag is $23 million.
The 38-year-old Hudson spent the past nine seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He was 8-7 in 2013 with a 3.97 earned run average in 21 starts. Hudson missed the last two months of the season with a broken ankle that he suffered in a collision at first base with New York Mets base runner Eric Young on July 24.
Before signing with Atlanta, Hudson spent the first six years of his career as a member of the Oakland Athletics. He had a 92-39 record with the A's from 1999-2004. He pitched alongside Barry Zito from 2000-04 in Oakland before leaving for Atlanta in December of 2004.
The two pitchers helped the A's reach the playoffs for four consecutive seasons from 2000-03.
Zito left the A's for San Francisco in 2006, signing a seven-year deal with $126 million. That deal has been mentioned as one of the worst in American sports history, let alone Major League Baseball history.
Zito went 63-80 during his seven years in San Francisco and never had an ERA below 4.00. During his seven previous years in Oakland, he had just one season with an ERA of more than 4.00.
According to USA TODAY Sports, Hudson had a 57-33 record with a 3.33 ERA in Atlanta since he missed most of the 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The Giants, who were second in team ERA in the National League in 2010 and 2010, USA TODAY Sports reported, had a team ERA of 4.37 last season, which ranked 13th among the 15 NL teams.
