This wasn’t what Andrew Bogut and the Cleveland Cavaliers had in mind when the two reached a deal to have the center to beef up their championship hopes, as the Australian wound up suffering a broken leg barely a minute into his Cavs debut. According to the Cavaliers, initial X-rays revealed that Bogut had suffered a fractured left tibia.
As reported by the New York Times, the injury occurred at the 11 minute 38 second mark of the second quarter, some 58 seconds after Andrew Bogut checked into the game for his Cleveland Cavaliers debut. The play saw Bogut closing out on the Miami Heat’s Okaro White, and as the latter attacked the closeout, had the newly-acquired Cavs center’s leg collide with his knee. Bogut immediately went down to the floor clutching his leg and had to be carried off the floor by his new teammates.
The Cleveland Cavaliers signed Andrew Bogut last week to a $385,000 contract for the rest of the season. The one-time NBA champion was seen as an integral addition to the Cavs back-to-back championship push, along with fellow midseason acquisitions Deron Williams, Kyle Korver and Derrick Williams.
The veteran has had a history of struggling with injuries. As noted by The Sydney Morning Herald, Andrew Bogut has only played in 671 games in his 12-year NBA career, at an average of 56 per season. In last year’s Finals, he injured his left knee in Game 5, and wound up missing the rest of the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In December, he hurt his right knee while playing for the Dallas Mavericks.
The Cleveland Cavaliers wound up losing more than their new center, dropping the game 106-98 against the Miami Heat. The Cavs are still playing without injured All-Star Kevin Love, while head coach Tyronn Lue did not coach the game due to flu-like symptoms.
