To the relative majority of casual and mainstream fans, active and former fighters, and current and former world champions, they see Saul Canelo Alvarez going home victorious when he and Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr. squares off in the ring on May 6 as part of the Mexican celebration of Cinco de Mayo. But Roy Jones, Jr., himself a former four division world champion, who in his heyday was incredible and fearsomely dominant, has a different opinion. He is giving Chavez a very good shot at beating Canelo, Boxing Scene reports.
Saul Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1,34KOs) and Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr., (50-2-1,32KOs), arguably both of them has claims to being the most popular active Mexican fighter, are on a collision course at a catchweight of 164.5 lbs, the former having fought his last fight at 154 lbs while the latter climbed the ring most recently at 168 lbs. Chavez appears to be on the receiving end as far as the detrimental effects of reaching the catchweight is involved. Which is why mostly are rooting for Alvarez, not to mention his superior overall boxing skills. He would even knock out Chavez according to an early assessment by Felix Tito Trinidad, one of the greatest former world champions from Puerto Rico.
But Roy Jones, Jr. is simply not counting off Chavez from pulling off the proverbial upset win. "You do have to give him a chance because there's the size advantage, be may be able to take a little bit more if he's not too drained from making weight. I think he's going to be fine, I think it's going to be a great fight and I think he has a really good chance of winning." He said in a further report by BoxingScene.
With the 20,000 tickets running out as early, Jones believe that most of the Mexican fans are trooping to the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas, the fight venue, to see Canelo loss because of them getting upset by the day due to the continued delay of the supposedly megafight between him and the Ukrainian phenom, Gennady Golovkin, who is currently terrorizing the middleweight neighborhood without significant resistance. Should there be any, Alvarez is the general consensus. Therefore, knowing that the bulkier part of the compatriot crowd is rooting for him, and the fight turning into battle for Mexican boxing supremacy, Chavez is reporting to the fight venue with greater motivations to win than his adversary - this could spell a big difference, Jones claimed.
