Golovkin-Jacobs II: New Yorker Can Pull It Off

With the recent outcome of the middleweight clash between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs, a rematch is likely to happen, although, not in the immediate future. It is said, it their second meeting Jacobs could pull off the victory. (Photo:Icon Sports Wire/Getty Images)

In what many observers believed Daniel Jacobs (32-2-0, 29KOs) was going to fall without getting up for the full count against the onslaught of Gennady Golovkin (37-0-0, 33KOs) did not happen in that encounter between two middleweight superstars over the weekend at the Madison Square Garden in New YorkCity. Gennady Golovkin, current undisputed middleweight world champion, did send Daniel Jacobs one time to the canvas in the 4th round but the New Yorker would get up quick.

In the ensuing rounds, the 34-year-old Kazakhstani would see himself brought by Daniel Jacobs, secondary WBA middleweight world champion, to the very last second of the fight. This was Golovkin's first time in his last 23 fights; in each fight, the opponent would fall without recovering for the full count. The official outcome though was still in Golovkin's favor narrowly escaping defeat via close unanimous decision by the score of 115-112, 112-113 and 115-112.

If only Daniel Jacobs fought Gennady Golovkin in the 1st half of the fight with a similar  approached he had employed in the 2nd half - with greater mastery and confidence - he could have went home bagging Golovkin's WBA (super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight world crowns, some boxing pundits argued. Apparently, Jacobs was being too mindful of Golovkin's anomalous human power. But after having survived it in the 4th round, Jacobs's confidence grew allowing him to fight with added mastery and offence that enabled him to produce a handiwork enough for him to win the fight according to some prominent people in the boxing circle.

Jacobs lost the fight but he certainly won moral victory, which is a very good recipe for a rematch to happen.  Which is why the possibility of them facing again is very likely in a not-so-distant future. Perhaps after a fight or two for each of them.

As far as Golovkin's camp is concerned they were appreciative of Jacob's performance and that they are willing to give the 30 -year-old New Yorker a rematch. And should it happen, with Jacobs already aware of the extent of his resistance against Golovkin's fighting skills and power, his chance at beating Golovkin is even more real and doable.
