Shawn Porter Advises Manny Pacquiao to Retire for Good Instead of Facing Amir Khan

Manny Pacquiao (59-6, 38 KOs) and Amir Khan (31-4,19 KOs) used to train under the same roof, which is the Wild Card Gym in California owned by famed trainer Freddie Roach. But an anticipation about them facing each other in a ring has always been an interesting and exciting one, a very good requirement for a financially lucrative fight.

Recently, both fighters took to their twitter accounts informing the world they were going to fight at last. To the disappointment of their fans, the talks of the fight did not live long as it was eventually cancelled for monetary reasons.

Following cancellation, Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions who promotes Manny Pacquiao, expressed his willingness to explore options necessary for the staging of the fight. But on the apparent condition that the Filipino senator should undergo an interim fight first, most probably in Australia against a local opposition Jeff Horn. Thus, the possibility of a Manny Pacquiao-Amir Khan showdown is still alive and afloat.

However, Shawn Porter, himself a former world champion in the welterweight class has a different idea in mind for his former sparring partner. He would love to see Manny Pacquiao, current WBO welterweight world champion, on permanent retirement.

After beating Tim Bradley in a rubber match in April 2016, Manny Pacquiao announced his retirement. His primary reason being his intention to attend to his duties full time should he win a senatorial seat in the Philippine senate in May 2016. He won and decided to hang up his gloves. A few months later, Pacquiao broke his earlier statements returning to boxing to capture Jessie Vargas' WBO welterweight championship crown in Nov. 2016.

Manny Pacquiao being pitted against lesser opponent like Jessie Vargas and potential opponent like Jeff Horn appears to be fine at all, but against Amir Khan, former unified light-welterweight world champion, Shawn Porter has some reservations. He believes the Manchester, England native is capable of beating anybody as long as he kept himself from getting hit. But for all his hand speed and lateral movements and good power, Amir Khan appears to be not the kind of fighter who exits the ring without a bruise. He is not a Mayweather or a Marquez when it comes to avoiding enemy punches.
