Xbox Scorpio: Performance Boost Insignificant, 4K Overrated According to Analyst

There's no doubt that Microsoft is lagging behind the console wars. The PS4 is actually outselling the Xbox one with twice the rate. And it's the reason why the Xbox One has started the development of Xbox Scorpio which promises to be the most powerful console to date. But according to Michael Pachter, the increase in performance would do nothing to help reverse Microsoft's fortunes.

According to the analyst, the industry is at the point of diminishing return where any form of improvement will only yield a small upgrade in graphics. Looking at the games of today, Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn are already capable of producing graphics that are almost indistinguishable from real life. It seems that the improvement of the Xbox Scorpio will only do so much from what is produced today that it may prove to be insignificant.

The Xbox Scorpio boasts 4K gaming capabilities with 60 fps. But according to the analyst, 4k resolution gaming isn't practical. 4k resolution offers four times the pixel count of 1080p resolution which is the standard platform of today. But the analyst says that the difference between the two is irrelevant in a majority of gaming setups.

A jump in 4k resolution is only distinguishable when playing on a 100-inch screen. But anything smaller than that will have little difference. The analyst argues that most gamers have a set up of a 32-55 inch screen. This means that the Xbox Scorpio and its 4k gaming capabilities would be rendered useless in today's gaming setup based on what Pachter said.

What the Xbox Scorpio needs right now other than the increase in performance are more exclusive games. Right now, the PS4 is sweeping the floor with big time exclusives coming at a constant pace. Meanwhile, Xbox has been quiet all throughout. The extra power will help but the Xbox Scorpio needs more than that.
