Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki has long been the franchise's top player. With 19 seasons under his belt, the German basketball player is nearing the end of his career. But his plans of playing 20 seasons for the Mavericks may have to be cut short with nagging injuries plaguing Dirk. His latest injury is a sign it may be time to retire from the sport for good.

Dirk Nowitzki is 38 years old and is already feeling the rigors that his long basketball career has inflicted on his body. Dirk has been known to be a durable player throughout his career but has struggled to play this season.

Dirk Nowitzki missed a number of games this season which led to the Mavericks having one of the worst records to start the season. At the time, Nowitzki suffered an Achilles injury which forced him to miss several games at the start of the season. And now, Dirk is again suffering from another Achilles injury which may be a sign of things to end.

According to Bleacher Report, Dirk Nowitzki left Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks with a sore Achilles and did not return. It's the same type of injury that made Dirk miss a couple of games at the start of the season. An Achilles injury is a death spell among athletes as it always leads to a significant decrease in performance especially for aging athletes like Dirk Nowitzki.

Even the great Kobe Bryant succumbed to the injury which forced him to retire shortly afterward. While Dirk Nowitzki hasn't torn his Achilles yet, it will likely happen if he continues playing. And his recent output speaks on an Achilles injury effect on an athlete's performance.

Dirk Nowitzki's stats are now his lowest since his rookie year. And he won't be doing better anytime soon as he gets older and his Achilles continues to pose problems. Dirk Nowitzki will likely return next season to cap off his 20-year career in Dallas but expect it to be his last.
