The latest criticism of Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III came, somewhat sympathetically, from a member of his Week 12 opposition on Monday Night Football. After the second-year quarterback suffered several brutal hits on the field Monday night during the team's latest loss, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks said that RGIII "shouldn't be playing."
Brooks was one of many 49ers who got their licks in on Griffin during the team's 27-6 victory Monday night and said after the game that Griffin, who has been in a sophomore slump since coming back from knee surgery in January, probably shouldn't have been on the field.
"He's obviously a man and he makes his own decisions, but I personally don't feel he should be playing right now," Brooks said per CBS Sports.
Brooks elaborated further when asked whether or not he meant that Griffin shouldn't be playing because of the history with his knee.
"I don't think he should be playing," Brooks said via CBS Sports. "You can see it. Everybody can see it, everybody can see it."
Brooks has 8.5 sacks through 11 games with an interception and 41 tackles this season.
Griffin went 17-for-27 for 127 yards with no touchdowns and one interception Monday night while being sacked four times and he rushed for just 22 yards on six carries without reaching the end zone. While Brooks' comments could be seen as critical, he also complimented the signal caller while admitting once again that he shouldn't be playing.
"He's a man, he has the heart of a warrior and is going to go out there and play regardless of the circumstance," Brooks said per CBS Sports. "Everybody can see it. He shouldn't be playing."
One year after leading the team to a 10-6 record and its first NFC East title since 1999 and its first trip to the playoffs since 2007, RGIII and the Redskins fell to 3-8 after Monday's loss while the 49ers improved to 7-4.
In his rookie season, Griffin went 258-for-393 (65.6%) for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions while also rushing for 815 yards on 120 attempts while reaching the end zone seven times. His sophomore season has not been as solid, as Griffin is 239-for-399 (59.9%) for 2,841 yards with 14 touchdowns and seven picks while he's rushed for 367 yards on 72 carries and has yet to score.
Griffin's latest setback mixed with the fact that Washington's playoff hopes are dashed, leads to the possibility that perhaps the Redskins will take Brooks' advice and give RGIII a break the rest of the way.
After all, he shouldn't be playing.
