Patrick Mahomes has had a horrible start to his 2021 season, losing three of his last four NFL games with the Kansas City Chiefs. Can he stop the rut in Maryland and record the victory in the Kansas City vs Washington showdown? Here's an in-depth preview of this battle between teams carrying similar 2-3 records.
Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 6 as -7 favorites
The alarm bells are starting to ring for the Kansas City Chiefs, who sit at the bottom of the AFC West standings with an abysmal 2-3 slate after a humiliating 38-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football. The Chiefs had no answer for Bills star QB Josh Allen, who threw three touchdown passes in Week 5 and ran for another score.
For the Chiefs to return to the win column in Week 6, they will need Patrick Mahomes to clean up his quarterback play. The former Super Bowl MVP has committed six turnovers in his past three outings, including five interceptions. Mahomes already has thrown six interceptions this season, putting him on pace to record 20 this campaign. His previous career-high in terms of interceptions came in 2018, when he had 12 interceptions.

This season, Mahomes had thrown 16 touchdowns, meaning he had recorded just 2.67 touchdowns for each interception this campaign. The lowest rating of Mahomes' career in that department is 4.17. That happened in 2018 when the Chiefs quarterback threw 50 touchdowns and recorded 12 interceptions.

Washington Football Team installed as +7 underdogs
Washington was sent crashing back to earth in Week 5 with an embarrassing 33-22 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Jameis Winston tormented Ron Rivera's men all afternoon long, throwing four touchdowns, including a Hail Mary on the final play of the opening half that swung the momentum in New Orleans' favor.
For Washington to return to the win column against the Chiefs, they will need to do a much better job on the defensive end. They allowed the Saints to rack up 369 total yards on Sunday, 271 of which came through the air. Kansas City is fifth in the NFL in passing offense, averaging 292.2 yards per game this season, so expect the Chiefs to attack Washington's secondary as well in Week 6.
One guy who needs to step up for Washington against Kansas City is Taylor Heinicke. He struggled mightily against the Saints, completing just 20 of 41 passes for 248 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He will fancy his chances against the Chiefs, who are the worst defensive team in the NFL this season, allowing 32.6 points per game this campaign.
Writer's Prediction
