The New York Yankees have received a significant setback as it was announced that key reliever Lou Trivino would miss the entire 2023 MLB season due to Tommy John surgery.

Trivino was initially placed on the injured list due to an elbow strain he sustained during spring training. He suffered a setback in late April, and a second opinion confirmed that he needed surgery to repair his UCL.

The loss of Trivino is a significant blow to the Yankees, as he was one of their most reliable bullpen arms last season, and his absence will be felt throughout the season.

Injuries have hit the Yankees' Pitching Staff

Adding to the Yankees' injury concerns, Carlos Rodon, their big free-agent acquisition, has also encountered issues with his back, and his rehab has reportedly stalled.

While he has thrown from the mound, he still does not feel right, and more medical opinions are expected.

Rodon had an exceptional 2022 season with the San Francisco Giants, posting a 14-8 record with a 2.88 ERA, earning him a lucrative payday. However, he is struggling to return to full fitness, and his absence will be a significant loss to the Yankees' starting rotation.

Furthermore, starting pitcher Frankie Montas, another trade acquisition, has also struggled with injury and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2023 season.

The Yankees' pitching staff has also been hit by injuries to other key pitchers, such as Jonathan Loaisiga, who underwent surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow and is not expected to return until at least August.

Despite these setbacks, the Yankees' pitching staff has managed to maintain a top-10 ERA in baseball, while their offense ranks 23rd in runs scored.

However, their recent loss to the Cleveland Guardians has left them with a 15-15 record and in last place in the highly competitive AL East division.

It remains to be seen how they will cope with losing key players for the entire season, but they will need other pitchers to step up if they hope to remain competitive in the tough AL East.
