Jameis Winston Rape Investigation: Prosecutor Insists He's Not Concerned About Heisman Trophy, Florida State Football

The lead prosecutor handling the Jameis Winston rape investigation this week vowed that football will not dictate the course of his investigation.

According to ESPN, Willie Meggs insists the probe will be "thorough" and not affected by either the Florida State star quarterback's playing schedule or his Heisman Trophy candidacy.

Led by the redshirt freshman, the top-ranked Seminoles will play for a conference title on Saturday and remain on course for a shot at a national championship. Widely considered a leading candidate for the Heisman, ESPN reports many voters are also waiting to see if Winston will be criminally charged before casting their ballot before the Dec. 9 deadline.

"I do think it's going to be hopefully by the end of this week, possibly into next," prosecutor Georgia Cappleman told ESPN of when a decision concerning Winston might actually be made.

Defense attorney Timothy Jansen told ESPN his client "wants it to be over." He later added "obviously he's focusing on football and academics and he knows it's a process and we're waiting for Mr. Meggs to conclude his investigation."

The alleged victim accuses Winston of sexually assaulting her at an off-campus party in December of 2012. Authorities have admitted the case languished for more than a year after Tallahassee police failed to turn over findings to the state attorney's office.
