After suing Ryan Garcia two weeks ago over a contract dispute, Oscar De La Hoya is now praising the 24-year-old.

The Golden Boy commended Garcia's decision to hire Derrick James as his new trainer, comparing the situation to his time with Floyd Mayweather Sr. as his mentor.

De La Hoya said this change by The Flash will only help him improve because he needs someone who will 'crack the whip.'

"From my experience, he [Garcia] needs authority, he needs military, he needs someone who's going to tell him what to f***ing do and not be afraid!" he said in an interview with Fight Hub TV.

"I had that as well. The one trainer that I most respected, the one trainer that would get me out of bed at 4.30 in the morning when I didn't want to get up, was Floyd Mayweather senior. He would literally throw a bucket of f***ing water over my head so I could wake up - but that's what I needed."

Mayweather Sr. was De La Hoya's trainer from 2001 to 2006. During that span, he recorded six wins and two losses.

De La Hoya and Garcia dispute

These comments from the Golden Boy may sound unsolicited because of their legal dispute.

The rift started when Garcia's camp sent out a letter claiming Oscar's company Golden Boy Promotions, failed to fulfill their promotional agreement.

De La Hoya, as a response, filed a lawsuit to ensure that the contract's terms would be enforced.

Garcia had issues with Golden Boy Promotions, even calling the company out as among the reasons why he lost to Geronta Davis in April this year.

The rift has yet to be settled.
