The Philadelphia 76ers might be missing one of their key players in the upcoming 2023-24 NBA season.

Forward Montrezl Harrell picked up a right knee injury during one of his offseason workouts, and MRI results showed that he has a torn ACL and meniscus tear, as per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The 29-year-old initially dealt with knee soreness after a workout, and he decided to undergo an MRI on Wednesday, revealing the injury.

Harrell's status for the upcoming season remains in jeopardy, and he might miss a lot of time, given the extent of the injuries.

A torn ACL usually requires surgery and takes about a year to heal, while the recovery time for a meniscus tear depends on the severity of the injury.

Philadelphia 76ers need another Joel Embiid backup

Harrell signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia as a free agent in September 2022. The undersized big man was the backup for reigning MVP and scoring champion Joel Embiid, averaging 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in 57 games.

The Sixers brought back Harrell on a minimum deal earlier this month. He won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year and NBA Hustle Award during the 2019-20 NBA season, his last with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Harrell was selected by the Houston Rockets with the 32nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, where he spent two seasons.

The 2013 NCAA champion from Louisville has since played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, and Charlotte Hornets before his Sixers stint.
