Kansas City Chiefs defense monster Chris Jones continues to hold his ground by not participating in the team's camp as he awaits a decision over his request for a more lucrative contract.

Still, that does not mean he is slacking.

Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes provided an update on how Jones is doing after deliberately skipping the training entering a new season.

However, the two-time Super Bowl MVP tried his best not to talk about the contract dispute.

"I talk to Chris, not necessarily about contract stuff," Mahomes said Wednesday.

"That's how I am about all things, I never talk about the contracts, I just talk about football, and how he's doing. I mean he's working out; he's staying in shape. All of that will handle itself, and all I can do is just be supportive, be a teammate."

Mahomes has always supported Jones, who is unofficially part of the Chiefs' main trio with Travis Kelce.

"I want these other guys to get paid," he said last weekend.

"I want Chris Jones to be in training camp. I want Travis Kelce to always be making money. I want everybody on the team here."

What does Jones want?

Jones is entering the final year of his four-year $80 million contract, and after a successful 2022 season, he wants a new deal, a better one.

He reportedly asked for a $30 million a year deal that would make him the second highest paid in his position.

However, the Chiefs do not want to give that right away.

"We think about it in the context of the Chiefs - and what's best for the organization, not only this year but as we go forward," team owner Clark Hunt said.

"One of the challenges is the salary cap. It makes it tough to keep a championship team together."
