Bernie Kosar's name may not ring a bell to most, especially for those who do not follow the NFL religiously.

But for those who do, Kosar is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and hailed as one of the most beloved figures in Cleveland Browns football history.

The 59-year-old has had his share of rough-and-tumble action in the NFL. Like most football players, the Ohio native must pay his debts physically. Now, Kosar is dealing with a serious brain health issue.

Football fields almost like concrete during Kosar's time

Kosar played at a time when some stadiums used thin artificial grass, a reason why getting hit or sacked during NFL games was highly tedious, Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com pointed out.

The scribe explained that Kosar played when several stadiums had old-fashioned artificial turf, adding, "And it's almost like it was concrete, almost, with kind of a rug over it. And so when you'd hit your head on that, it would bounce off of it."

Wear and tear of NFL catching up with Kosar

One can only imagine what the 1987 Pro Bowler went through while actively playing pro football. He has gone through some harrowing health scares, particularly seizures.

"Between 2014-18, you had several seizures. One happened at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, and you went into a coma. It lasted for 96 hours. All you remember is going down in the airport, waking up in a Chicago hospital," Pluto added.

For now, Kosar is just glad he is alive. As his way of giving back, the former NFL player is trying to educate young players about the perils of brain injuries via Fox News.
