Mike Shanahan's tenure as coach of the Washington Redskins may be coming to a close.
The Washington Post is reporting that the Redskins' lifeless 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, coupled with an ESPN report early Sunday suggesting that Shanahan almost quit last season because of Redskin owner Daniel Snyder's relationship with quarterback Robert Griffin III, has fractured the relationship beyond repair.
Multiple stories from the Post indicate that Redskins sources believe that either Shanahan or someone close to Shanahan fed the story to ESPN to help the coach's image.
Snyder was not available for comment after the game, and Shanahan attempted a pre-emptive quote about the situation after Sunday's game to no avail:
"It's not the right time or place to talk about my relationship with Dan Snyder," Shanahan said in his opening statement. "It's not the right time and place to talk about something that happened a year ago. I'll get a chance to talk to Dan at the end of the season. And I'll give some viewpoints from me, I'm sure he'll give me his thoughts on what direction we'll go, and so we'll communicate that at the proper time."
The first four questions after the opening statement related to Shanahan's future, and each time he said he would only talk about football and playing against the Atlanta Falcons next week.
One of the Redskins officials who believed the story to ESPN was leaked, told the Post that Shanahan's exit from the organization was increasingly likely.
"I don't know that it can be fixed now," the anonymous source said.
Shanahan has a year left on his contract and took Washington to the playoffs last season. 2012 was his only winning season during a four-year tenure with the Redskins. He has a 24-37 record in Washington.
