Former NFL player Sergio Brown, known for his stints as a football safety for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills, was taken into custody in Southern California on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 10.

Although the exact details of the charges against Brown were not specified, an arrest warrant indicated that he was being sought for first-degree murder.

The body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, aged 73, was discovered in a creek behind her residence in Maywood on September 16.

Concerned relatives notified the police, reporting they could not locate or establish contact with Myrtle or her son during that time.

The former Notre Dame player had initially referred to reports about his mother's death as "fake news."

Brown had a career in the NFL that spanned seven seasons, from 2010 to 2016. During this time, he participated in 94 games, with 15 starts, accumulating 144 total tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 10 pass deflections, and 8 quarterback hits.

Sergio Brown awaits extradition

Brown was taken into custody and subsequently booked into San Diego County Jail without bail after re-entering the United States from Mexico as part of his alleged involvement in the murder of his mother.

The 35-year-old is awaiting extradition to Maywood, a suburb of Chicago, where he will face the murder charge, as confirmed by the authorities.

Illinois authorities are granted time until November 13 to facilitate Brown's transfer back to their jurisdiction.
