NFL veteran Joshua Dobbs had his most productive year last season when he was inserted as the Minnesota Vikings' main quarterback after a season-ending Achilles injury to Kirk Cousins.
Although his tenure did not translate to a full-time job, he got a new lease on life after signing a fully guaranteed $2.25 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
The deal comes with $750,000 in playtime incentives.
This means he will be the backup to MVP candidate Brock Purdy. He switched places with Sam Darnold, who is now with the Vikings after a one-year $10 million contract.
Darnold spent only one season with the Niners and played in 10 games. He completed 28 of his 46 passes for a 60.9 percent completion and threw for two touchdowns.

Filling up what Darnold left should not be that hard for Dobbs, dubbed Passtronaut.

Dobbs is generally a journeyman in the NFL.
He entered the league as a 135th overall pick in 2017 through the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He stayed there for two seasons and moved from team to team since then.
Dobbs played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 before being traded to the Vikings in October when Cousins' injury opened up opportunities for him.
He played five games for Minnesota and started in four.
He finished the season on a high, throwing for 895 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions. His best game was against the Atlanta Falcons, when he went 20-for-30 passing for 158 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, wheeling his team to a 31-28 victory.
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan first noticed Dobbs when he was with the Cardinals. He thought of the 29-year-old as a smart quarterback who deserved more.
"I think he's playing real good quarterback play right now," Shanahan said in September last year.
"He's one of the reasons they've been in every game. They're really committing to the run, try not to give up explosives and keep guys out of the end zone on defense, and he's not turning it over. He's been extremely decisive. When it's there, he consistently makes it, when it's not there, he plays it smart, doesn't turn it over. He has been able to scramble and makes some plays. He's been very competitive in the quarterback run game when they haven't honored him."
Is he a good signing for the Niners?
He is.
The team paid $4.5 million for Darnold's services last season. They got a bargain in Dobbs as the player is not only a backup QB.
If Purdy goes down, Dobbs can come in as a starter and expect an almost similar quality, thanks to his experience with the Vikings as QB1.
Of course, it would be great if the Niners didn't need Dobbs' services.
However, Dobbs will have to earn his spot, as the team still has Brandon Allen on a short-term deal.
It is a matter of time before he takes over Allen.
The Niners hope to remain close to Super Bowl contention after a failed attempt last season when they lost in the final game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
