J.R. Smith and New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson are at odds again, with Smith reacting to Woodson's latest criticism of his shot selection by shooting just one time in the team's most recent loss.
Smith scored just two points and went without a basket in the team's 90-86 loss at Boston Friday night. The New York Daily News reports that during Wednesday's win over undermanned Chicago, in which the Knicks blew a huge late lead, Woodson and Smith exchanged heated words over some of the shots the volatile swingman hoisted.
The News reports Woodson's ire was raised all the more by something Smith said while sitting on the bench during the same game. Sources told the newspaper Woodson waited until after the game was over to confront Smith.
"Mike said that after all I've done for you I can't have you talking back to me like that," a source told The News, adding that over the last couple seasons Woodson has been one of Smith's biggest public supporters. The same source added Smith further angered Woodson by making what he described as a lewd comment.
The News reports that during Thursday's practice, Woodson used game film to point out instances where he felt the reigning Sixth Man of the Year winner forced up shots when he could have passed. Smith's apparent response was his 27 minutes, one-shot effort in Boston.
Smith followed up that performance by again scoring just two points on one field goal in the team's 111-106 home win over Atlanta on Saturday. Woodson also appeared to bench the team's fourth leading scorer for the fourth quarter.
When asked about Smith taking just one shot in Boston, Woodson told The News "I don't know what that's about."
