The latest and most prominent to tap into that is San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, who signed a five-year, $170 million extension in 2023, the highest for any player in his position.
He is set to earn $34 million annually.
Micah Parsons is due for such a payday. However, according to the latest rumors, he might not get the bag while still wearing the Dallas Cowboys colors.

The star linebacker is in the last year of his rookie contract and could earn $21.32 million by 2025.
However, the latest Micah Parsons trade rumors are being fed by chatters that he and the organization are no longer on good terms.

Parsons has already made the All-Pro first team two times, made Pro Bowler thrice, and finished top-3 in DPOY voting three times in his young career.
His off-the-field behaviors outweigh those accolades, his talent, and his potential, and according to insiders, the Cowboys felt his attitude has "worn thin."
"I've heard from way too many people this offseason," Audacy host Shan Shariff revealed at 105.3 The Fan show. "I'm talking about at least four different people (have said) that Micah has worn thin there. I don't know how much is true and how much it actually hurts (Parsons' reputation). I don't know whether this is the behavior of a typical superstar. I don't (know) how damaging it is."
"But all I do know is this - I've heard from way too many people that if Micah Parsons was out of there, there would be a decent amount of people inside the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco smiling or breathing a sigh of relief."
Parsons' issues and controversies
While the host did not divulge clear details regarding the issue they are throwing at Parsons, there are well-documented incidents.
The latest is about his selfishness.
Former Cowboys receiver Jesse Holley accused the 24-year-old of being self-centered in plays, saying he only wants to play for himself.
Parsons, who is also active on social media, immediately responded through his podcast, saying he was not the one calling the play.
His relationship with the media came into focus, too, last season.
Parsons was criticized for not facing reporters after losing to the Green Bay Packers.
Defending his action in his podcast, he said that he was just too embarrassed to accept they lost to the Packers at home.
"We had talked about how much [better] we had played at home, how much it stood for us to be at home and then to go like that at home was completely embarrassing and unacceptable," he said.
"I couldn't even look at that loss or feel any type of way because of how embarrassed I felt It took me a while to even show my face in public. I disappeared completely."
The Dallas Cowboys have not said anything about Parsons' future beyond his rookie contract.
However, the franchise is trying to save some money as they are set to designate him as a defensive end.
This move will allow them to save at least $3 million, with Parsons seeing his initial salary of $24 million for 2025 reduced to $21 million.
