Trick Williams has made it into the record books by winning the TNA World Championship while still being contracted by WWE. This unprecedented moment happened at the WWE NXT Battleground, where Williams defeated Joe Hendry, marking an astounding transformation in the dynamics of inter-promotional wrestling.
This surprise title switch has heightened the hype over the current WWE-TNA alliance, which went into effect in January 2025. It even caught the attention of a WWE legend who lauded this as the "biggest story of the year."
WWE-TNA Crossover Reaches New Heights
Although cross-promotional appearances have become increasingly prevalent since early 2024, Williams capturing the TNA World Heavyweight Title elevates this partnership to a completely different level. Before this, championship victories were normally reserved for stars in their own particular promotions.
Placing TNA's premier title on a WWE star, the companies are making a very strong statement: the lines between promotions are increasingly intersecting, and upcoming storylines may become even more unpredictable.
Bully Ray Says 'This Is the Biggest Story of the Weekend'
During an appearance on "Busted Open Radio" via Wrestling Inc., WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray discussed the weekend's explosive happenings, also including Cody Rhodes' return on Saturday Night's Main Event and AEW's Double or Nothing pay-per-view.
Bully Ray was firm in his statement, saying that Williams' title victory was the biggest news to emerge from all three events.
"It's Trick Williams. Trick Williams is now your TNA World Heavyweight Champion. This is unprecedented, and in being unprecedented, to me, makes it the A story," the 53-year-old said.
He underlined the fact that such action defies traditional wrestling conventions, especially for two big promotions with their respective devoted fan bases and unique rosters.
Is Joe Hendry WWE-bound?
The ripple effects of this title change could spread even wider shortly. Bully Ray even speculated that Joe Hendry, a former TNA Champion, could be the next big signing of WWE.
According to Ray, if TNA fails to maximize Hendry's momentum, they may lose a homegrown star. With that being said, he could go to WWE.
With Hendry already becoming a regular sight on NXT television, particularly after his bout with Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41, the indications are that there is an eventual WWE signing to come when his TNA contract runs out later this year.
What recently happened was more than a moment- it's a harbinger of what's ahead. Anything can happen in the WWE-TNA collaboration; Williams could be the next big thing, and Hendry could be the newest WWE wrestler soon.
