As 2013 comes to an end, some free agents in Major League Baseball still have no homes, and free agent pitcher Bronson Arroyo is no exception as the 6-foot-4 right-hander said he "isn't sure" who is interested in signing him but that he's "fine with waiting out this free agency process so far."
Arroyo said that he isn't worried about finding a new place to pitch after hurling for the Cincinnati Reds since 2006, but also added that if the process lasts until mid-January he may become more aggressive in finding the right team.
"If it's January 15th and I'm still spinning my wheels, I'll probably change my tune," Arroyo told ESPN.
According to the report, many scouts believe that Arroyo, who turns 37 in February, would be better suited to remain in the National League rather than go to the American League, and Arroyo would prefer to pitch on the East Coast instead of the West Coast. He believes he has at least three more seasons left in the tank as well.
Arroyo debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2000 before moving to the Boston Red Sox from 2003-05 and he then settled in and found a home with the Reds in 2006.
After eight seasons in Cincinnati, Arroyo is in no mood to pursue suitors himself and would rather wait for interested teams to approach him before weighing his options and making a decision, comparing his current process to an interesting hypothetical situation.
"There's no point in me really thinking about where my perfect place is, because I don't know who's interested," Arroyo said per ESPN. "It's like going to a party and the whole premise is to find a wife. There are 10 girls there, and three of them are smoking hot, but they don't even look in your direction twice, so there's no point in going after them. Then maybe somebody else comes along who didn't seem so attractive at first, and you like what she's saying and you think, 'Hey, maybe this is the one.'"
Arroyo went 14-12 last year with the Reds with a 3.79 ERA, 1.153 WHIP and 124 strikeouts. Over his 14-year career, Arroyo is 138-127 with a 4.19 ERA along with a 1.292 WHIP while fanning 1,479 hitters.
Arroyo has yet to find a home, but the righty remains confident someone will emerge by mid-January.
