Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher made his first coaching misstep of 2014. Maybe he wanted to get it out of the way before the BCS National Championship Game.
CollegeSpun.com reported that Fisher engaged in a welcome news conference at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, Calif., on New Year's Eve. Fisher poses with Mickey Mouse at the end of the welcome, in which Mickey extends his hand to Fisher.
Fisher, however, just turns and walks away, forcing Mickey to do an awkward clap.
The undefeated Seminoles will take on Auburn on Monday to determine the national champion. Fisher can be forgiven if he didn't react quite right. First of all, he is preparing for a national championship game.
Second, Fisher's son suffers from a rare genetic blood disorder called Fanconi anemia, as the Orlando Sentinel reports. The disorder usually claims the lives of those infected before they reach the age of 40.
Third, despite signing a contract extension to remain head coach at Florida State through 2018, Jimbo Fisher still could be a candidate for the head coaching job at Texas.
CBSSports.com reported that the extension is not an automatic guarantee that Fisher couldn't wind up as Mack Brown's replacement at Texas.
The report recycled a quote from Seminoles athletic director Stan Wilcox talking about the uncertainty of retaining a sought-after head coach.
"I think that there's a sense of relief that's it's done, but anytime you're one of the top coaches in the country and there's a top program that's open, you're going to be on the list because that institution, Texas, can go and get basically anybody they want," Wilcox told The Associated Press as reported by CBSSports.com.
There was no word as to whether Mickey asked Fisher whether he was still a candidate at Texas, which could've led to the handshake snub.
