Friday will prove to be make or break for Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak as he is scheduled to meet team president and CEO Tommy Smith to learn his fate for the future with the team.
ESPN reports that the meeting will be an organizational evaluation of Munchak and a discussion to see what the future holds for the franchise. The team missed the playoffs for a fifth straight year this season, leading to speculation that Munchak could be out as head coach.
Munchak has been on board for three of those five seasons since taking over for Jeff Fisher in 2011, and has gone 22-26 while finishing with a 9-7 record in 2011, 6-10 in 2012 and 7-9 this past season.
Team general manager Ruston Webster, will also be part of the meeting, according to ESPN. Smith was scheduled to land in Nashville Friday morning, but ESPN reports that it was unclear if Smith had already made his decision prior to the meeting or if he wants to hear about the plan going forward with Munchak on board and what staff changes would be involved.
Smith is the son-in-law of Bud Adams and took over for him after he passed away in October. The Titans had a rough year after having to overcome question marks at quarterback following an injury to 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker.
Locker and the Titans jumped out to a 3-1 record during the first four weeks before he suffered hip and knee injuries that would eventually sideline him for the season after he attempted to return.
Seven of the Titans nine losses were against teams with over 10 wins. Munchak began his Hall of Fame career as a guard with the franchise as the Houston Oilers and he played with them from 1982-1993 before starting his coaching career with the Titans in 1994.
It remains to be seen if 2013 was the end of the line for him and the franchise.
