Despite an end-of-the-season meeting between Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis and head coach Dennis Allen leading many to believe that the coach would be fired, Davis said it was just a regular meeting and that the coach will return to the sidelines with the Raiders for 2014.
ESPN reports that Davis was amused that the media made such a big deal out of the end-of-the-season meeting which he described as "just protocol."
"We met this evening at the Raider facility, and the meeting went really well," Davis said via ESPN. "We talked about a lot of things, from personnel issues to the coaches to a review of the past season to the draft and our needs for next season. We're ready to rock and roll."
According to ESPN, despite rumors of Allen being the hot seat, Davis said that his job security is not an issue and that the two of them will meet with general manager Reggie McKenzie on Wednesday to discuss the future of the team.
ESPN reports that Davis wouldn't discuss the status of the assistant coaches that Allen would like to keep on board and also wouldn't discuss whether or not Davis was set to offer Allen a one-year or two-year contract extension and if there were any hang-ups about it.
Allen will enter his third season as the Raiders coach in 2014 and has two years remaining on his four-year deal. The defensive-minded coach hasn't been able to elevate Oakland's defense as the team's defensive unit finished 18th in total defense in 2012 before regressing to 22nd this past season.
Allen, 41, was the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator before coming over to Oakland prior to the 2012 season. He is serving as the eighth coach for the team in the last 13 years, so it makes sense that the team wouldn't make a drastic change.
In the last two seasons, the Raiders have finished 4-12 under Allen and have yet to improve. The franchise hasn't made the playoffs since 2002 where Oakland made it all the way to the Super Bowl.
Allen's job is safe for now, but he has a lot of work to do.
