After a fantastic rookie season in 2012, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had a tumultuous and often-criticized sophomore campaign in 2013. RGIII took to his official Facebook account to address his critics' claims.
Griffin said he understands why he gets a lot of attention, but he doesn't like all of it.
"You think I want it to be national news that I visit a beach? Or shop at Walmart? Or wore red shoes instead if green yesterday? Well I don't," Griffin wrote on Facebook. "I'm 'striving' for greatness just like my fellow teammates do. The 'attention' that comes with being a QB in the league is what you are referring to. All the press conferences and talking to the media? Mandated by the league to have a press conference every week during the season and during team activities during the off-season."
After throwing for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions and rushing for 815 yards on 120 carries for seven scores while leading the Redskins to a 10-6 record and their first NFC East title since 1999 in 2012, Griffin regressed in 2013. RG3 threw for 3,203 yards with 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and had just 86 carries for 489 yards without reaching the end zone this season. Washington finished 3-13 on the year, leading to coach Mike Shanahan's firing.
Griffin, who had knee surgery in January of 2013 and didn't look like the same player afterwards, was constantly critiqued this season for his on-field play, the relationship with his coaches and general manager and his appearance in commercials for Adidas and Subway. Griffin addressed people talking about him being in commercials in the post.
"Oh wait, you must be talking about the Commercials? Right? Oh ok so what was the deal with those in 2012? WE won the division," Griffin wrote on the social media site. "So in 2013 when WE get knocked down, and finish last it's because of the commercials? If that is your reasoning I have nothing more to say. WE will get back up. That is what matters. I hope I answered your question well enough. And that you keep supporting the team."
Griffin may do his best to lay low this offseason, but the only way he'll silence his critics is by turning in a better performance in 2014.
