Adrian Peterson may be headed for surgery depending on the results of an evaluation of his injured groin slated for this week.
According to USA TODAY Sports, Peterson is scheduled to confer with Philadelphia-based specialist Dr. William Meyers this week and make a determination from there. The 28-year-old reigning league MVP missed two of the Vikings' final three games this season dealing with the injury. Peterson has also pulled himself from competing in the Pro Bowl scheduled for Feb. 2..
Meyers is the same physician who performed the sports hernia surgery Peterson underwent last season. If groin surgery is now required, estimates are Peterson could be sidelined for up to two months.
Peterson has been hampered by his groin injury since a November 17, loss at Seattle. He finished the year with 1,266 yards rushing, significantly down from the 2,097 he ran for during his MVP season.
Peterson has four years and $57 million remaining on the deal he signed with Minnesota in 2011 and is scheduled to make $12 million in salary.
The Vikings recently tabbed Mike Zimmer as their new coach and he is on record in asserting he plans to refocus on the team's ground attack featuring Peterson.
