While frigid fans watch on when the Seattle Seahawks take on the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2, among them will be NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has vowed to be in attendance outdoors when the biggest game of the year emanates from what's likely to be a chilly MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
ESPN reports that a league source has confirmed that the commissioner will sit outside during the Super Bowl no matter what the weather is like and that his seats are in the outside area. The report indicates that Goodell loves cold-weather games and that he's sat outside with fans at several of those over the years.
According to ESPN, this won't be the first time that an NFL commissioner braves the cold weather to sit with the fans in a cold-weather Super Bowl. According to the report, former commissioner Pete Rozelle sat outside during Super Bowl VI in what has been the coldest Super Bowl to date at Tulane when the recorded temperature was 39 degrees.
According to local weather reports in New Jersey, this year's Super Bowl is set to break the record as the high is expected to be 37 degrees with the low being 25, and there is a possibility of rain or snow that will add to the controversy of having the game in New Jersey has caused.
Goodell has stated that the game of football is meant to be played in the elements and that he will sit outside no matter what the weather holds, while insisting that it will add to the game.
The Broncos defeated the New England Patriots 26-16 Sunday afternoon to earn their first ticket to the big game since 1999 while the Seahawks topped the San Francisco 49ers 24-17 to earn their first trip to the game since 2005.
It'll be a cold Super Bowl--possibly the coldest in history--but commissioner Goodell has vowed to be outside to experience it.
