What is the Most Popular Sport ? 2014 Poll Shows NFL Remains Number One in America [VIDEO]

Pro football is still the king of sports in America for the past three decades, according to a recent poll.

As reported by ESPN.com, pro football is the favorite sport in America as shown by the results of a survey from the Harris Poll, which has been inquiring adult fans about their favorite sports since 1985.

In the latest survey conducted by the said poll body, 35 percent of the respondents said NFL remains their favorite sport while Major League Baseball was a far second at 14 percent. Next was college football with 11 percent, followed by auto racing with seven percent and the NBA with six percent. Rounding out the list were the NHL with five percent and college hoops with three percent.

During the first year of the poll, the NFL won by a single percentage point over the MLB, 24 to 23 percent. But the NFL has increased its popularity by leaps and bounds, while fan interest in the MLB has steadily declined. In fact, pro baseball has suffered a nine percent drop in popularity over that span. It has been suggested that baseball has not been able to get back its fans who were turned off by the 1994 World Series cancellation.

Conspicuously missing from the list is professional golf. According to the report, the sport was popular throughout the pro career of Tiger Woods who began playing professionally in 1996. Its popularity rate was no less than four percentage. Yet by 2010, only two percent of American adults called it their preferred sport, coinciding with Woods' scandals.
