It turns out Joe Montana wasn't just busy during the San Francisco 49ers' farewell game at Candlestick Park.
The San Jose Mercury News reported that the Hall of Fame 49ers quarterback spoke on Bay Area radio station 105.7-FM, The Game, and said his reason for not attending the farewell ceremony extended beyond his son Nick's bowl game in New Orleans as a member of the Tulane Green Wave.
"If somebody left IBM and went to Apple, if they were shutting IBM down, do you think that guy would go back and visit?" Montana said. "There's something strange about athletics and what people expect you to do."
Obviously, Montana was referring to his football career, which did not end in San Francisco. He played two years with the Kansas City Chiefs, leading the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game his first season there.
He is correct, however, in pointing out people's assumptions because no fan would ever recognize him first and foremost as a former quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. Montana is one of two quarterback to win four Super Bowls (Terry Bradshaw is the other), and he won all of them as a member of the 49ers.
It's precisely the reason that Montana went into the Hall of Fame as a San Francisco 49er.
But Montana also said he never liked playing in Candlestick, which adds to his rationale of missing the farewell game.
"I wasn't always a big fan of Candlestick to begin with, even though I played there," he told the radio station. "It might've been the worst field we played on throughout the years. But we had great memories there, yeah."
He revealed, however, that plans are in the making about a flag football game involving former players from the 49ers against a team yet to be named inside Candlestick.
