The indignation is far worse than the actual vote cast.
As Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning cruised to his fifth Most Valuable Player Award, the big controversy from the coronation was that Manning did not win the award unanimously.
After all, Manning just set the single-season record for passing yards (5,477) and touchdowns in leading the Broncos to best record in the AFC and tied for the best record in the NFL at 13-3.
But former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim Miller is getting raked over the coals for casting the lone dissenting vote. A man who actually played the position in the NFL had the audacity to select New England quarterback Tom Brady with his vote.
"It pains me because Peyton had such a historic season," said Miller, who now works for Sirius XM NFL Radio, to the Denver Post. "He is the offensive player of the year, no question. But having played the position, when I looked at who had the most value to his team, I thought Tom Brady carried that team the same way Adrian Peterson carried Minnesota last year."
The response to Miller's opinion - from non-former NFL players - was swift.
"It wasn't a very difficult vote," said Dan Pompei of websites SportsonEarth and Bleacher Report, to the Denver Post. "In fact, it should be unanimous."
"Certainly every voter is entitled to vote for the candidate he feels is most deserving, but in a historic season for a quarterback, it's hard to understand how Miller did not see the way 98 percent of the Hall of Fame Voters did," sport-kings.com wrote.
"Brady is a great player, but it's absurd that Manning didn't win unanimously," Frank Schwab wrote for Yahoo! Sports. "There's no significant measure in which Brady was better, except that Manning had better teammates. That shouldn't be a reason to not vote for someone. And anyone who uses the strict 'most valuable' definition as a reason to not vote for Manning obviously has paid no attention to what Manning does in a locker room and meeting rooms for a team."
The non-quarterbacks have spoken, denouncing the NFL quarterback. Never mind the fact that the teams split their season series 1-1 and the fact that not only does Manning have better player, but the difference in the supporting casts is night and day.
And if Brady had a healthy Rob Gronkowski, who knows how that AFC title game would've turned out?
The absurdity of the Tom Brady vote is the backlash it received. Manning got the award, but the former NFL quarterback's logic for going with Brady is valid.
