Super Bowl XLVIII opened up in memorable fashion, with Peyton Manning's famous pre-snap mind games backfiring to open play. As Manning adjusted the play his confused center snapped the ball to him, sending it flying into the end zone for a safety.
Folks with traditionally successful Super Bowl boxes recoiled as the game opened up 2-0 Seattle. A failed drive ensued, followed by a Seattle field goal by Steven Hauschka. A three-and-out ensued, but Denver's defense stiffened as the Seahawks drove, holding them to a second Hauschka field goal bringing the score to 8-0.
Near the end of the first quarter Manning was hurried into an interception to Seattle safety Kam Chancellor, which led to the Seahawks scoring the game's first touchdown. Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch plowed into the end zone to push Seattle's lead to 15-0.
Their fortunes worsened later in the second quarter as Manning was hit while trying to hurl a pass downfield. Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith snatched it out of the air and returned it 69 yards for a defensive score.
After a scintillating halftime show the Seahawks had no issue remaining focused. The kick to open the second half bounced into the arms of Percy Harvin, who looked very healthy in returning it 87 yards nearly untouched for a score, pushing the lead to 29-0. It got worse in the third quarter when Jermaine Kearse hauled in a Russell Wilson pass, bounced off multiple tacklers and scampered into the end zone for a 23-yard score.
Demaryius Thomas, the lone bright spot of a terrible night for Denver, was able to grab an eight-yard touchdown to avoid the humiliation of a shutout. Thomas stood out, catching 13 passes for 110 yards and the one score.
Doug Baldwin snared a 10-yard pass from Russell Wilson to conclude the scoring, lifting Seattle to a 43-8 victory. Malcolm Smith was named the MVP of Super Bowl XLVII.
