Oklahoma State star sophomore guard Marcus Smart could face disciplinary action after shoving a Texas Tech fan in the closing seconds of the Cowboys' 65-61 loss to the Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday night.
According to NewsOK.com, the Red Raiders had taken a 63-61 lead with 39 seconds left, the Cowboys' wing player Le'Bryan Nash turned the ball over, leading to a Texas Tech fast break. The Red Raiders' Jaye Crockett was fouled on the play, which sent Smart to the Tech baseline, where he approached Red Raiders fan, identified as Jeff Orr. The two exchanged words, and Smart shoved Orr.
Smart received a technical foul, and the Raiders went on to win the game. After the game, Oklahoma State officials still were restraining Smart, who was still shouting and screaming about the incident. He had to be escorted off the floor.
The Cowboys have lost four straight games and could be without Smart for an extended period of time, pending a school and/or Big 12 investigation.
After the game, Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said he didn't know what happened to incite the incident and hadn't seen a replay.
"I'm still trying to figure it out," Ford said.
According to Fox Sports, no word had yet come out as to what was said during the exchange.
USA TODAY Sports' For the Win identified Orr as Texas Tech's "number one fan," posting a YouTube video of Orr.
The Big 12 office told NewsOK.com it will investigate the incident Sunday. One of the questions sure to be asked is why Smart received only a technical foul and not an ejection when he went into the stands - not because he shoved a fan, but also for his own protection.
