Tonight at 7 p.m. ET, the Boston Bruins (19-15-6, 44 points) and Pittsburgh Penguins (24-10-5, 53 points) skate against each other live from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh in what will be the second of three meetings this season. Boston has dropped its last three games amid an uncharacteristically rough start to the season as it closes out a two-game road trip while Pittsburgh has won two of its last three contests and closes ot a four-match homestand.
The first time these two teams met, the Penguins topped the Bruins 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 24.
Pittsburgh sits atop the Metropolitan Division standings while Boston is fifth in the Atlantic Division, but just one point out of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Penguins are coming off of a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday and expect another difficult matchup tonight.
"We expect a tough game," Kris Letang said per NHL.com. "Obviously, they have guys back in the lineup. We expect a strong game on their part."
Sidney Crosby is second in the NHL with 32 assists and is tied with Evgeni Malkin (17 goals, 26 helpers) with a team-best 43 points.
Though the Bruins are ninth in the Eastern Confrence this season, they'll enter tonight's game as if it were a playoff match.
"I'd call it a healthy rivalry," Bruins coach Claude Julien told NHL.com. "I think there's two proud teams there that have always been some of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference and have taken pride in that, and whenever we play each other it's an opportunity to showcase what each other's team has, and I think that's what hockey's all about and what this sport's all about."
Patrice Bergeron paces the Bruins with 28 points off of eight goals and 20 assists while Carl Soderberg has eight markers and 19 helpers for 27 points and Loui Eriksson has found the twine nine times and added 15 assists for 26 points.
In net, Boston is slated to turn to Tuukka Rask and he is 15-10-6 with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.
Pittsburgh is slated to counter with Marc-Andre Fleury in the crease and he is fourth in the league with 20 wins and ranks fifth with a 2.18 GAA while leading the NHL with six shutouts and adding a .926 save percentage.
