WNBA Dunk Contest [VIDEO]? All Star Weekend Could Include Female Dunkers

The WNBA is considering adding a dunk contest to All Star Weekend by next year’s event, according to news reports.

While Phoenix Mercury rookie center Brittney Griner would be the obvious choice as the biggest benefactor of such festivities, several other WNBA players have also proven their mettle in such areas, among them Los Angeles' Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike, Chicago’s Sylvia Fowles, Tulsa’s Elizabeth Cambage and Minnesota’s Maya Moore.

Parker previously beat current NBA high-risers Josh Smith and J.R. Smith in a dunk contest during the McDonald’s High School All-American celebration in 2004. Griner has already dunked twice in games this year and regularly puts on a show for fans during pre-game warm-ups.

“Definitely would have something that the fans would love,” she told ESPN.com. “It would be a nice addition to the weekend and I got a couple of things I’d pull out for it.”

WNBA president Laurel Richie recently told The Associated Press that league officials have been discussing the event as a potential replacement to the now -defunct skills and three-point contests. While the event would be a first for the WNBA, 15 years ago the ABL held such an event, won by Portland Power star Sylvia Crawley.
