Colin Kaepernick Rumors & Update: November Loss to St. Louis Rams Fueled QB's Offseason Improvements? [VIDEO]

The low point of the 2014 for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did not come during a four-game losing streak that eliminate the team from postseason contention. Losing to the St. Louis Rams was.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that 49ers offensive coordinator Geep Chryst - the team's quarterbacks coach last season, talked about the low moments during last season's disappointing 8-8 season and singled out two games that fueled Kaepernick's offseason regiment with quarterbacks coach Dennis Gile and two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner.

49ers offensive coordinator denies that Colin Kaepernick regressed in 2014

"The Seattle game (a 19-3 setback on Thanksgiving day at Levi Stadium in San Francisco) was a hard loss," Chryst told the Mercury News. "But the Rams game (a 13-10 St. Louis win that dropped the 49ers to 4-4 on the season) was a hard, hard loss. Because we're at the goal line, executing a center-quarterback exchange . . . and we didn't execute it. Just that simple. It sounds like such a trite coaching phrase. We need to execute better. But . . . that was a rookie center's first start. And you don't want to say that's a defining moment. But you can't help but be crushed when you walk off the field and you realize that game was lost, when in your mind, you had it checked off as a win and made a great drive down there and did all these things to make sure you celebrate a victory and you walk off and it's defeat."

After that loss, the Niners managed to win three straight, but they couldn't overcome their ensuing slump.

Colin Kaepernick's late-game decision making a bigger problem to fix than his mechanics from 2014

"That's a very sobering moment for him," Chryst said. "That's a very sobering year. And he's using that as fuel to win-and to get back to a Super Bowl. That's what he wants to do."

Kaepernick spent 11 weeks with Gile trying to work on becoming a better pocket passer in the 11 weeks immediately following the start of the 49ers offseason. Warner also occasionally worked with the Niners starter during that time.
