The Chicago Bears made their biggest move at the beginning of the free agency market by acquiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent quarterback Mike Glennon. Will Glennon be the savior of the Bears franchise?
The Chicago Bears had an awful 2016 season having only won three out of the sixteen games they have played as they settle to the fifteenth place in the NFC division. Part of their problem last season is their lackluster offense as they only averaging 17.4 points (28th) per game. And now, they are moving on without Cutler and would like to try a signal caller for next season.
According to NFL.com, the Chicago Bears and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon agreed to a three-year pact which includes a $18.5 million guarantee in salary. The move also signifies that the Bears had decided to break up their ties with QB Jay Cutler.
Cutler, who've been the starting QB for the Chicago Bears since 2009, has thrown for 23,443 yards and 154 touchdowns with almost 62 percent completion rate in eight seasons with the Bears. But, he still failed to impress the Bears organization that he can carry the team to a better position in the future.
However, getting Mike Glennon doesn't mean that the Chicago Bears have already settled to him as their primary quarterback. Many pundits are saying that the Bears will still use their no. 3 pick to select a top quarterback prospect in the coming 2017 NFL draft in case that the experiment with Glennon will fail. But Glennon believes that he can make the Bears a better team with him running the offense.
According to ESPN, Mike Glennon thinks that the Chicago Bears system perfectly fits his skill sets. He is very optimistic that he can run the Bears offense easily and praises Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains' comprehensive system that he considers will suit to his strengths.
In four years with the Buccaneers, Mike Glennon had thrown for 4,100 yards with 30 touchdowns and 15 interceptions at a 59.4 percent completion rate. For now, the Chicago Bears must hope that the gamble of letting Jay Cutler go and bring in Glennon would benefit them in the coming season.
