Michael Sam's father now claims he was "terribly misquoted" by a New York Times article delving into his son's recent announcement that he is gay and seeking to become the NFL's first openly such player.
Michael Sam Sr. told ESPN he doesn't want people to think he has an issue with his son's sexual orientation and "I did not say anything about my grandkids," despite being quoted as saying he is "old-school" did not want them "raised in that kind of environment."
While Sam Sr. acknowledged that he did say much of what the newspaper reported he did, he further insisted much of his language was taken out of context. "I told them Deacon Jones is going to roll over in his grave because here comes my son and that he's going to be a star in the NFL," Sam Sr. told ESPN of being quoted about how the legendary, Hall of Fame tough guy would feel about sharing a locker room with the former Missouri star.
Sam Sr. later reflected about he has now had more time time to ponder his newfound relationship with his son and wishes he had spent more time with him. ESPN previously reported that when Sam returns to his hometown in Texas he usually stays with friends instead of his family.
