The Philadelphia 76ers will honor one of the best guards in league history by retiring the familiar No. 3 jersey of Allen Iverson at halftime of their game against the Washington Wizards on Saturday.
Iverson's jersey will be the eighth to be retired by the Sixers franchise, joining the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer, Bobby Jones, Julius Erving, Billy Cunningham, Maurice Cheeks and Charles Barkley.
The 38-year old Iverson was an 11-time All-Star and won the league's top individual honor, the Most Valuable Player award, in 2001 when he led the upstart 76ers to the NBA Finals against Shaquille O' Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers. Drafted out of Georgetown, he was the 1997 Rookie of the Year and won the All-Star Game MVP twice. He made it to the All-NBA team seven times and won the scoring title four times. He also topped the league in steals thrice.
"I don't regret anything," Iverson was quoted as saying by USA Today when he officially announced his retirement in October last year. "If I could take back all the mistakes that I made throughout my career, I would have had a perfect career. I would have missed no shots. I would have made no turnovers. I would have went right instead of going left when I was supposed to, every game. I would have got on [I-76] at 4 o'clock instead of getting on 76 at 5. I can't take it back. I can't take anything back. So I don't regret it."
