Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning passes physical, will return for 2014

Omaha! Omaha!

Football fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning has been fully cleared to play football in 2014. Fans and critics wondered if Manning’s multiple neck injuries would prevent him from resuming his career, but the physical is actually mandated because of language in his five-year, $96 million contract.

Manning played in all of the Broncos’ 19 games in 2013 and led them to last month’s Super Bowl in New Jersey, despite losing to the Seahawks. The 37-year-old set single-season records in 2013 for touchdown passes and passing yards. He needs only 18 TDs in 2014 to pass Brett Favre as the all-time leader.

Manning underwent four neck surgeries in 2011, including a fusion, but doctors didn’t find any surprises or complications during Monday’s physical. Now that Manning is officially ready to return, his $20 million salary for the 2014 season becomes guaranteed.

Manning will enter 2014 as the No. 1 ranked QB for fantasy football purposes. In fact, he doesn’t need to surpass his 55 touchdowns and 5,477 yards from last season to finish as the most valuable player for fantasy purposes. Eric Decker is expected to walk in free agency, but the rest of Manning’s elite supporting cast will be back for another monster season.
