Steve Nash retirement rumors: Former MVP vows decision won't be about money [VIDEO]

Steve Nash's NBA future beyond this season remains uncertain, but now the 40-year-old, two-time MVP assures USA Today Sports his decision on what to do won't be "because I want the money."

Seemingly nursing a never-ending list of injuries, Nash has played in just 10 games this season for the Lakers, leading to widespread speculation his NBA days may be numbered. Just don't count Nash among the naysayers.

"The reality is, I'm not going to retire because I want the money," Nash told USA Today. The Lakers guard has a year remaining on his deal which pays him nearly $10 million next season.

Nash has averaged just eight points and five assists this season, a far cry from his Phoenix heyday when he led current Lakers' coach Mike D'Antoni's "seven seconds or less" Suns teams to arguably the league's most explosive offense.

The Lakers signed Nash in the summer of 2012, right about the same time they inked center Dwight Howard with a plan of teaming the pair with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol for yet another NBA title run.

With the team riddled by injuries, the plan never came to fruition and a season later Howard bolted as a free agent to Houston.

With Nash still sidelined and Bryant having played in just six games this season, the Lakers have fallen on even more hard-pressed times this season and currently have the worse record in the Western Conference.
