49ers Not Trading for Darrelle Revis

The New York Jets' offseason saga with star cornerback Darrelle Revis continues, as rumors of trade discussions between the Jets and San Francisco 49ers have been squashed by ESPN's Chris Mortenson. Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted the following Thursday afternoon-"ESPN's Chris Mortensen said a source told him the 49ers are not inclined to pursue Darrelle Revis at this time. So there's that."

The 49ers became a hot topic of discussion in terms of Revis because of the money they saved by shipping Alex Smith to the Chiefs, the interest they have shown in the top cornerbacks on the free agent market, and the abundance of draft picks they have. In any deal involving Revis, the Jets will likely be looking for several picks, and high ones at that, for a man widely perceived as a top two defensive player in the NFL.

Despite coming off ACL surgery, Revis is unlikely to come cheap for his suitors. The 49ers have 11 picks in the upcoming draft, are getting another from Kansas City, and should receive three more as compensation for their free agent losses. They had one of the best defenses in football last season, but one spot that could be pointed to as a weakness was the cornerback position. Carlos Rogers is a physical corner with poor hands, and Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver were picked on at times. Adding Revis to a team that already has Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Navorro Bowman and Aldon Smith could take a great defense to historic heights.

Still, the 49ers deny that they are in the market for Revis, and their recent history would indicate trading for an expensive star on the final year of his deal runs contrary to their normal operating practices. Tre9er, a blogger for Niners Nation is quoted in an SB Nation report as saying, "Personally I would tend to agree with Mort that this doesn't fit the 49ers approach to building a team. They pay their own, don't make blockbuster moves, and don't engage in bidding wars. Most people citing some sort of "precedent" are going way back, to the Deion Sanders signing, for instance, which was nearly 20 years ago."
