The Golden State Warriors are contemplating on changing their name, but say they would seek feedback from their fans first whether they should pursue this plan. The news comes in the heels of an earlier announcement that the franchise has a new 12-acre property in San Francisco where a new arena could be constructed soon.
As per ESPN, Warriors president and CEO Rick Welts said: "We're very curious what our fans think of that. I couldn't imagine making that decision in the very near future, but we definitely want to see what our fans prefer."
The franchise has been using the Warriors moniker since they were established in 1946 in Philadelphia. Rumors have it that the management are considering to revert to its old name, the San Francisco Warriors, in time for the change in arena located in downtown San Francisco. The arena is projected to open before the start of the 2018-19 NBA season.
The team currently plays its home games in the Oracle Arena at Oakland, which according to Welts is one of the oldest arenas in the NBA. The Warriors executive said that they have asked the architects tasked to design the new building to make it comparable with Oracle Arena, which can sit around 18,000 to 19,000 people.
The franchise's plan to ask for inputs from its fans is obviously an acknowledgment of the rabid support that it has gotten from its fanbase. Prior to back-to-back trips to the NBA playoffs this year and last year, the Warriors were one of the more moribund franchises in the league.
