Robinson Cano apparently just didn't have enough time to win over each New Yorker one by one.
ESPN.com reported that New York Yankees fans were loud in the disapproval of Cano in his return to New York after ditching the Yankees in the offseason to sign a $10-year, $240 million contract to join the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners beat the Yankees 6-3 as Cano went 1-for-5 and had an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.
But he actually had the last laugh before the game as he agreed to appear on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" skit in which he stood behind a cardboard cutout of a his head shot in New York City as Yankees fans were asked to boo the cutout.
As the fans finished their booing, they were asked to do it one more time as Cano came out from behind the cutout to get a decidedly different reaction from the Yankees fans, all of whom - at least the ones that "The Tonight Show" aired -- apologized for booing or shook Cano's hand and treated him famously.
According to ESPN, Cano left the Yankees with a bit of acrimony during the offseason. Cano's camp was angry that their initial $300 million offer to the Yankees to retain Cano's services somehow ended up in media reports.
Cano and his handlers also wanted the Yankees to increase their seven-year, $175 million offer to $235 million and felt disrespected when the Yankees wouldn't meet the asking price. That made Yankees representatives angry.
Yankees fans called Cano a sellout, according to ESPN. He said after the game he has no regrets about his decision.
"I can't control the Yankees," said Cano, who is hitting .296 with a homer and 12 RBI, as reported by ESPN. "I can control myself. They made a decision and I guess we're both happy, because I'm happy where I'm at right now and I'm happy to be a Mariner, and good to them."
