Despite the announcement that he will be returning to the ESPN booth as a game analyst starting in the Eastern Conference Finals, don't count out former Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson in the race for the New York Knicks coaching job with a source telling NY Post that he can still get the position.
The media outfit reports that Jackson's contract has a clause that allows him to return to coaching or talk to other teams in need of a bench strategist. The same source said Jackson believes he has a shot at getting the New York Knicks job despite his lack of affiliation with Knicks president Phil Jackson, although he is also very much interested in working for ESPN next season.
The Brooklyn-born Jackson, who also played for the Knicks in the '90s, will be working with play-by-play announcer Mike Breen and analyst Jeff Van Gundy for the ESPN coverage of the Eastern Conference Finals which will start in Indiana on Sunday. The trio have called the NBA Finals for five straight years starting in 2006 up to 2011, after which Jackson left the booth to take on the Warriors coaching job.
The Knicks are now back to square one after their original choice, Steve Kerr, agreed to join the Golden State Warriors last week. Other names that have been linked to the Knicks job are former Lakers coach Mike Dunleavy, who has also coached the Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trailblazers; Derek Fisher, and former Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis. Other Jackson players like Tyronn Lue and Luke Walton are also said to be in the running.
