Today at 12:35 p.m. ET, the San Francisco Giants (38-21) and Cincinnati Reds (27-30) take the field at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati for the series finale of a three-game set. Each team looks to escape with a series win in the rubber match this afternoon. San Francisco closes out a seven-game road trip that it is currently 4-2 on while Cincinnati embarks on the third contest of a 10-game homestand. The Reds won the opening game 8-3 on Tuesday before the Giants gained some revenge with a 3-2 win on Wednesday.
San Francisco sends Madison Bumgarner (7-3, 2.85 ERA) to the mound while Mike Leake (3-4, 2.92 ERA) toes the rubber for Cincinnati.
Bumgarner has a dazzling 1.59 road ERA this season, but he'll look to erase a seven-run shellacking where he lasted just four innings in his only other start at Great American Ball Park back in 2011 when he grabs the ball today. The left-hander comes into Cincinnati on a five-game winning streak.
"The last two starts I felt really good," Bumgarner told MLB.com. "... I feel like I'm always concentrating on trying to get better and working on stuff. I'm glad to see it paying off."
The southpaw is tied for third in the National League with his seven wins and ranks fifth in strikeouts (85) heading into this start.
Leake is coming off of a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday where the Reds scored six runs for him.
"It definitely helped me relax a little bit and allowed me to attack their hitters a little more," Leake said of having rare run support in that outing, according to MLB.com.
Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is third in the NL with 44 runs scored while Michael Morse ranks fourth with a .571 slugging percentage. Morse also leads San Francisco in homers (12) and RBIs (39) this season.
Reds outfielder and table-setter Billy Hamilton ranks second in the NL with 22 stolen bases while Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier is hitting .271 and leads the team with 11 homers and 30 RBIs.
The Giants and Reds close out their three-game series when they take the field this afternoon at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
